Character Breakdown

8/14/2019

The Lovers
  • Lysander - honest and forthright; in love with Hermia; he hatches the plan whereby he and Hermia flee Athens to elope.
  • Demetrius - fickle and impulsive; now in love with Hermia, though he most recently wooed Helena and has now turned his attention elsewhere.
  • Hermia - daughter of Egeus and in love with Lysander; strong and independent, with a sharp temper; she refuses to follow her father's orders to marry Demetrius.
  • Helena - best friend of Hermia; morose and with low self-esteem; she is in love (obsessively) with Demetrius
The Fairy-Folk
  • Oberon -  King of the Fairies; powerful, jealous, and mercurial; at odds with the Queen, Titania.
  • Titania - Queen of the Fairies; proud, powerful, and in conflict with Oberon, her king and (sometimes) lover.
  • Puck - Oberon's servant and fiery jester; a fairy spirit and prankster with a love for chaos and the absurd.
  • Peas-blossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustard-seed - Fairies in Titania's Court
The City-folk
  • Theseus - Duke of Athens; a regal, mature, and strong leader with genuine affection for his subjects; engaged to Hippolyta.
  • Hippolyta - Queen of the Amazons; regal, mature, and outspoken; engaged to Theseus.
  • Egeus -  Courtier and Master of Ceremonies for Theseus; father to Hermia; a devout patriarch; furious that his daughter refuses to marry the man of his choice
The Mechanicals /  Workers
  • Quince - A carpenter; the long-suffering and somewhat nervous leader of an amateur theatrical troupe; he always looks to Bottom for advice.
  • Bottom - a weaver; easily offended, highly effusive, very theatrical, and the star actor of the amateur theatrical troupe. Has a giant ego.
  • Snug - a joiner and a (somewhat unwilling) member of the amateur theatrical troupe; nervous and slow of speech; he is given the Lion's part so as not to have to learn any lines.
  • Snout - a tinker and a member of the amateur theatrical troupe; dimwitted, but eager; an honest and plain man; he is cast as a "wall" in their play.
  • Flute - a bellows-mender; a simple and unsophisticated young man; quite proud that his beard is just beginning to show; he is the newest member of the amateur theatrical troupe and cast, unwillingly, as a female (Thisbe) in their play.
