Welcome to the most interesting of artistic journeys. How will we write, record, and edit a short film? How will Group Interp work following safety mitigations? How much fun will we have? The answers to these questions can be found in this incredible ensemble we've assembled. We look forward to exploring them with you. First rehearsal will be Tuesday, January 19th at 3:30 on Zoom. This first week will be entirely remote, and we will aim to begin some in-person rehearsals starting the following week. We'll read Anya's Ghost at our first rehearsal, but feel free to look at it ahead of time if you like. We're looking forward to an excited journey with you all! ~Mr. Miller & Jamie Click here for the Rehearsal Link
Here is all the info you need to know about SF/GI (it feels a bit weird not typing CP/GI...)
What Is It? These are two state-wide competitions Group Interpretation and a new Short Film. GI is as it sounds, a group taking a work and interpreting it for performance. It is based on previously written material, but can be adapted as need. There is a simple unit set, uniform costumes, no lights, no sounds, no props. The majority of stage focus is towards the audience, and actors typically play multiple roles. The Short Film is an original script created by the ensemble and recorded, edited and submitted. Will these be virtual or in-person? Yes. In short, we will have to be flexible. GI needs to be recorded without editing, but can be done either in-person or via Zoom. A challenge of in-person is we would have to maintain distance with the blocking. With Zoom, we could potentially play with the medium in unique ways. That said, regardless of what we choose, we will ensure safety. Likewise, with SF, we can edit as much as we need. That gives us greater flexibility to record small groups or scenes and edit them together. We also can build some sets, costumes, etc. as needed. Regardless, we will need to be flexible in our approach as things can change. How Do I Audition? Auditions will be held virtually on Thursday, January 14th. The link will be posted on the DC Website. If you have a conflict with that time, reach out to me about submitting a video audition. There is a form to fill out, and you must Register with the school. What should I audition with? The options are endless. You can choose a monologue from a play (see our Resources Page for some links). You can write something original (we are needing to craft our own story for the Short Film). What I'm hoping to see are big choices and character work. I don't want to see just you, but the use of your body and voice to create something interesting. Whatever you choose should be 90 seconds or less. What if I just want to be on crew... or even Crew Leadership? That's great. We will need a strong crew, especially for the short film. Fill out this form to apply. There are opportunities to write original music, create original sound effects, costumes, lights, everything's fair game in the Short Film. What shows are we doing? Great question! For the Short Film, we get to write our own, so there are options for folks who are strictly writers. For GI, I'm unsure. I'm reading a bunch of graphic novels right now, because if we end up doing the show via Zoom, we can potentially play with the squares in an interesting way. But I'm open, so if you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. What will the Competition look like? I have no idea. The current play is: "for Virtual Asynchronous Contests to be conducted on their scheduled dates: Sectionals: March 19-20, 2021 and State: March 26-27, 2021." As has been said many times in recent months, we'll have to be flexible and adapt. What if I have other questions? I'm sure there are questions I've missed. This is a new competition (SF), a new format (GI), during a pandemic. Ask away, and I'll certainly answer as best I can. I'm looking forward to these unique artistic challenges. I hope you'll join me. |
